    Course: Cavalier Yacht and Country Club Tommy Bolt had the tournament won until he double bogeyed the 18th hole on Sunday. That enabled Pete Cooper to sneak past Bolt and win by a stroke. He had trailed Bolt and Shelly Mayfield by one stroke after three rounds. Wally Ulrich opened the tournament with a 29-31-60 on the 6,065-yard Cavalier Yacht and Country Club course.     Course: Kingsmill River Course Mark McCumber shot 5-under 66 to hold off Bobby Clampett and Scott Hoch, giving McCumber his first Tour victory in two years. McCumber's eagle on the par-5 15th put him two strokes ahead with three holes to play. His 5-foot par putt on No. 17 circled the cup before falling in.     Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic: Tom Sieckmann
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Tom Sieckmann's only Tour victory came in dramatic fashion, on the second playoff hole over Mark Wiebe. Sieckmann had missed 10 of 12 cuts in the first half of the '88 season, but was tied for the lead on Friday and Saturday after consecutive 66s, and a 69 on Sunday put him in a playoff with Wiebe, the '85 champ. The two parred No. 16, the first playoff hole. Then Sieckmann won the tournament on 17. Winner’s earnings: $117,000. Total purse: $650,000

    Crestar Classic: Juli Inkster
    Course: Greenbrier Country Club The tournament moved to the Greenbrier Country Club after eight years at Sleepy Hole. Juli Inkster repeated her 1988 championship, but in a different way. In 1988, she won a four-way playoff. In 1989, Inkster won by 5 strokes. Weather was horrible and the third round was suspended, so Inkster wound up playing 28 holes on Sunday. Her 6-under 210 was the highest winning score on the LPGA Tour to date in 1989. Winner’s earnings: $45,000. Total purse: $300,000.

    Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic: Mike Donald
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Journeyman Mike Donald made short work of the longest playoff in A-B Golf Classic history, coming back on Monday morning to beat Tim Simpson on the fourth extra hole. Donald, Simpson and Hal Sutton finished at 16-under 268 to force the only three-man playoff in the tournament's history, an event suspended twice Sunday by rain. Winner’s earnings: $153,000.     Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic: Lanny Wadkins
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Lanny Wadkins turned what many hoped would be a two-man Virginia duel into a Sunday stroll as the A-B purse reached $1 million for the first time. Wadkins shot a 3-under 68 on the final day, while playing partner Curtis Strange faded with a 2-over 73. Wadkins cruised to a five-stroke victory over Larry Mize. Strange began the day two strokes behind his buddy Wadkins, a Richmond native transplanted to Dallas, Winner’s earnings $180,000. Total purse: $1,000,000

    Course: Greenbrier Country Club With crowds dwindling and Crestar unsure whether to continue sponsorship, Farm Fresh became the tournament co-sponsor. The purse was increased to $400,000 and the tournament expanded from 54 to 72 holes. On the course, Hollis Stacy won her first tournament in six years by one strokeAs for Farm Fresh: "Our intention is to be in this for the long run," president Mike Julian said, but that long run lasted two years.

    Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic: Mike Hulbert
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Mike Hulbert's putt in the gloaming, on the first playoff hole, gave him the third PGA Tour victory of his career on a soggy Sunday. Hulbert led the '89 A-B by a stroke with three holes to play. But bogeys at 16 and 18 left him one shot out of the playoff that Mike Donald won. Winner’s earnings: $180,000. Total purse: $1,000,000

    Crestar-Farm Fresh Classic: Jennifer Wyatt
    Course: Greenbrier Country Club Jennifer Wyatt won the tournament by two strokes, but three months later, Crestar and Farm Fresh pulled their sponsorship. After more than a month of exploring other sponsors and potentially moving the tournament to Kiln Creek on the Peninsula, tournament officials gave up and folded the event. Winner’s earnings: $63,750. Total purse: $425,000.

Gallagher went eagle-birdie at 15 and 16 to take the lead for good on the way to a 6-under 65. He finished at 15-under 269, two shots better than Chip Beck. Winner’s earnings: $118,800.     Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic:  Mark McCumber
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Mark McCumber ended the longest victory drought of his career and won his second event at Kingsmill. Clinging to a one-stroke lead over eventual runner-up Glen Day, McCumber chipped in from 40 feet for birdie on the par-5 15th. After a 91-minute lightning delay on the 16th hole, McCumber found himself 60 feet from the hole and chipped in again for birdie, essentially sealing his eighth victory. Winner’s earnings: $198,000.     Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic: Ted Tryba
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Ted Tryba weathered triple-digit temperatures, his own nerves and a late charge by Scott Simpson for his first career victory. Tryba, a Tour ironman who plays nearly every event, shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s and finished at 12-under 272. He was ahead by four shots with seven holes remaining and held on to beat Simpson by a stroke. Winner’s earnings: $198,000. Total purse: $1,100,000.

    Course: Kingsmill River Course Same tournament, different beer, as the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic became the Michelob Championship, and Scott Hoch set a tournament record (19-under 265) in a wire-to-wire victory.Hoch birdied his first three holes Sunday and beat Tom Purtzer by four strokes.     Michelob Championship: David Duval
    Course: Kingsmill River Course A star was born, or more accurately, a star emerged at the Michelob's first October date. David Duval defeated Duffy Waldorf and Grant Waite on the first playoff hole for his first Tour victory.
    The Michelob was the first of three consecutive wins by Duval, including the Walt Disney World and Tour Championship, and he finished second on the money list with nearly $1.9 million. Winner’s earnings: $279,000 Total purse: $1,550,000.

    Michelob Championship: Notah Begay III
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Notah Begay III came to Kingsmill known primarily as Tiger Woods' former Stanford teammate and departed with his second tour win of the year. Begay defeated Tom Byrum on the second playoff hole after a late charge in regulation. Begay trailed third-round leader Mike Weir by three strokes with four holes to play, but birdied 15, 17 and 18 to finish at 10-under 274 and tied with Byrum. Winner’s earnings: $450,000.     Michelob Championship: David Toms
    David Toms persevered on Friday, with the help of a handful of Advil, and eventually defeated Mike Weir in a playoff in 40-degree temperatures. Toms made a five-foot par putt on the first playoff hole, which seemed a long time after Friday's walk up the ninth fairway, when he considered withdrawing because of a painful disc in his neck.     Course: Kingsmill River Course David Toms finished an exceptional year by repeating at Kingsmill. Toms surprised himself with the victory. He had missed the cut and played miserably the week before at the Texas Open. But he threw down the gauntlet, at Kingsmill with an opening round 64 and led by two shots after three rounds.     Course: Kingsmill River Course The Michelob Championship's last call became Charles Howell III's first professional victory Sunday after he carded a 14-under 270 to defeat Scott Hoch and Brandt Jobe by two strokes at Kingsmill. Six months earlier, Anheuser-Busch officials revealed they were dropping the PGA Tour event in favor of an LPGA tournament. The last PGA tournament had a total purse of $3.7 million. The first LPGA purse was $1.6 million. Winner’s earnings: $666,000.

    Michelob Light Open:  Grace Park
    Course: Kingsmill River Course The LPGA returned to the Hampton Roads area for the first time since 1992 and Grace Park came away with the trophy after her 18th-hole putt prevented a four-way playoff.     Michelob ULTRA Open: Cristie Kerr
    Course: Kingsmill River Course Because of previous rain, Kerr played 36 holes on Sunday. The marathon didn’t bother her as she won by five strokes.     Course: Kingsmill River Course Like Kathy Whitworth in 1982, Annika Sorenstam’s victory was the last of her career. In fact, two days after winning the tournament, she announced she would retire at the end of the season. Sorenstam finished with 72 LPGA victories and 93 championships worldwide.     Course: Kingsmill River Course. Cristie Kerr won for the third time in Williamsburg, taking the Kingsmill Championship on the second playoff hole against Suzann Pettersen. The two were tied at 12-under par after 72 holes. Winners earnings: $195,000. Total purse: $1.3 million.

    Kingsmill Championship: Jiyai Shin
    Course: Kingsmill River Course. In an epic return to the LPGA Tour, the winner wasn't decided until the ninth sudden-death playoff hole on Monday morning. Jiyai Shin outlasted Paula Creamer after the two finished 16-under for the tournament, then they battled through eight playoff holes before darkness forced the two to wait until Monday. That's when Creamer missed a five-foot putt, then Shin tapped in a putt from a foot away.
    Winners earnings: $195,000. Total purse: $1.3 million.
