    First epidemiologist and father of western medicine.

    Middle Ages

    Bubonic Plague started and was brought to Europe. Death toll from the plague was the highest out of any natural disaster, war, or famine in history. Leprosy become an epidemic, and hospitals were built to both treat and house lepers.

    Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek discovers the microscope. Johannes Guttenberg invented the printing press.
  • Edward Wigglesworth

    Developed the first life expectancy tables for the U.S.
  • Age of Enlightenment

    Edward Jenner Discovered a vaccine for smallpox.
  • Pasteur, Koch, Lister

    Louis Pasteur proposed the germ theory of disease discovering how microorganisms reproduce, developed the pasteurization of milk, and was the first to introduce a scientific approach to immunization. Robert Koch discovered that microbes caused disease. Joseph Lister developed both the antiseptic method of treating wounds, as well as aseptic technique.

    Medicare and Medicaid was created as amendments to the Social Security Act to provide assistance in the payment of medical bills for both the elderly and the poor.
