History of Film

  • The First Camera

The very first camera was partially built in 1816 by Nicéphore Niépce. Later on this led to the Kodak being born in 1886. After the Kodak, Celluloid was developed in 1889
  • The Horse Race

Eadweard Muybridge and his friends were watching horses race, when Muybridge had the idea that a horse could have all four legs off the ground while running. his friends didn't believe him so they set up 16 cameras. With these 16 cameras capturing one after the other they were able to prove that, indeed, horses could have all four legs off the ground. On top of that they figured out how to capture moving pictures!
  • The Lumiere Brothers

Similar to Thomas Edison's idea of a projector, the Lumiere Brothers came up with a design for one. The difference being that they would make their's public. All recordings displayed were really short so there wasn't much too interesting in them.
  • The First Movie

The first movie was called The Great Train Robbery. This movie features 14 scenes and was 12 minutes long! It was created by one of Edison's students Edwin Porter.
  • Nickelodeons

These small store front buildings would have a projector in them and many rows of seats similar to today's cinemas. The movies" displayed were silent and would often have a pianist playing over them. Because there was no sound, there would also usually be someone making sound effects.
  • Thomas Edison and the MMPC

Edison wanted to own everything about motion pictures, so he started buying companies and working towards that goal. The MMPC had a tight grip on everything movie related and could harm your crew if they found out about it. But why did they do this? Money, they wanted lots of money.
  • Hollywoodland

People fled west to escape the clutches of the MPPC. This later became Hollywood located in California. The scenery was brighter, and the people were more free.
  • Talkies

These were the classic silent films.... but now with sound! People were on edge about this at first but it turned out to be even more successful. For actors that were foreign though, this was a travesty to their revenue.
  • Color in film!

These were like talkies..... but now with color! The earliest ways to add color in film were a bit primitive, and people complained about their head hurting after films. How did it work? A green and red filter spinning in front of the display!
  • The Blockbuster Era

The very first block buster was Jaws. These were movies that made huge profit. Star Wars, Alien, etc. are also other blockbusters!
  • CGI

CGI is an art of computer generated images being displayed in film. A good example of this is Jurassic Park. When first made, CGI was really only used to display large moving objects.
  • Film to Digital

Cameras of the digital variety around the 2000s to more efficiently record things. Film is still to this day better quality than digital and is still used sparingly. By the 2010s digital was the new meta way to record movies.
