    Lumiere brothers show films to audience
    In 1895, the Lumiere brothers began making and showing short films in a cafe in Paris. They did this with their invention, the cinematographe. The films that they made were about a man falling off of a horse and a kid trying to grab a fish.

    The first known use of animation was in 1899. It was used in the short Matches: An Appeal, by Arthur Melbourne-Cooper. He used stop motion technology to animate his film.

    The first film to use color was an untitled film by Edward Raymond Turner. It was made in 1901. They made the film in black and white, and then put filters over the camera to give it color

    In 1902, Georges Melies, a French moviemaker, made A Trip to the Moon. This was a 14 minute long film, and used innovative special effects and animation. It is widely regarded as the first science fiction movie ever made.

    In 1903, an employee of Thomas Edison, Edwin Porter, made the film The Great Train Robbery. His movie had 14 scenes and lasted for 12 minutes. This was much longer than previous movies.

    The first feature length film was The Story of the Kelly Gang. It was about the outlaw Ned Kelly. It ran for over an hour and had a reel of more than 4,000 feet of film.

    Technicolor was used starting in 1916, and helped ad color to many films. It was used in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as well as Robin Hood. It was also used in the live action movies Wizard of Oz and Singing in the Rain.

    The first use of sound in a film was in the Warners The Jazz Singer. This movie was made in 1927. After this film released, most movies after this point became known as talkies.

    Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated film with spoken English. This movie was produced by Walt Disney, and really launched his future career and company. This film was also made with color.

    After the success of Jaws, the idea of a blockbuster movie came about. A blockbuster is a movie that lots of money is spent on the production of. Blockbusters generally have lots of special effects and a big budget.

    During the 1980's the VCR was invented. With this invention people could purchase movies to watch any movie they wanted to and watch it at home. This allowed the film industry to make even more money.

    Currently, the movies that are most successful have been superhero movies. Movies such as the Avengers and Captain America have lots of special effects and action packed fight sequences. 3D movies have also become popular recently.
