    Horse in Motion
    There was a bet between to guys to see if all 4 legs of horse leaves the ground while running. Who they found out was by setting up multiple cameras that took pictures as the horse passed by. When the pictures were put together it showed that there was motion in between each shot like a video.

    Pictures in Motion
    The man who took the pictures of the horse running was Eadweard Muybridge. After take the pictures he saw that together you could see the movement of the horse. He made the zoopraxiscope which showed the images one by one in a rapid speed from a rotating glass disks.
  • Vaudeville

    Small theaters that showed short skits and song/dance numbers were called Vaudeville. They were very popular since they played short films in between sets. The name Nickelodeons comes from Vaudeville since the shows only costed a nickel.

    In 1891 the Peephole Kinetoscope was made and showed off by Thomas Edison. A strip of film would pass by between a lens and an light bulb while someone look though the peephole. The only problem was that only one person at a time could look at it.

    Two brothers know as the Lumiere Brothers did something that Thomas Edison couldn't. They made the cinematographe which was able to show a movie to groups of people. The only thing was that they were really really short.

    The first movie that had a story or narrative was made in 1903. The movie was made by Edwin Porter which became the first epic. The movie was called 'The Great Train Robbery' and was 12 minutes long.

    Nickelodeons became a big business with 26 million viewers a week. Edison was able to do this by make a monopoly with his Motion Picture Patents Company. The reason he did this was to own everything and make money. They started to change prices of film people wanted to see.

    When Charlie Chaplin first begin as a actor he was making $105 a week. By 1917 he was making a million a year with his silent films. He was one of the first actors to be California.
  • Hollywoodland

    Other film companies were not safe while Edison was around. Anybody who try to make films had to either work for them or get beat up. What they did next was move to California so they could be as far from them as possible.

    Later in the years new technology was being made. With what they had then, they were finally able to put voices in their movies. The first 'Talkie' as they called them was The Jazz Singer.

    Movies have been messing with color since 1912. It wasn't until the 1930s when they were actual able to make full films in color. The most while know movie, but not the first, in color is 'Wizard of Oz'.
  • Hollywood Without the Land

    Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began a contract with Los Angles in 1949. They deiced to rename it Hollywood to not reflect the "Hollywoodland" housing development. Films began to become more and more popular while Hollywood would expand and grow.
