    Edward Muybridge made a bet with his friends on whether or not when a horse is running at full speed all four of its feet are off of the gronund at one point. So he took a serious of cameras and lined them all up and had a horse run by as he set them all off at once. Not only did he prove his point, but he also set film making in motion.
  • The kinetoscope

    The Kinetoscope would show (for a price) moving short clips of imagery. the only downside to this a was, that only one person could view them.

    (Started in France) Projectors that could show short (30-60 second) motion pictures on a screen in front of an audience.

    Vaudeville (small theaters that featured short dramatic skits, comedy routines, and song and dance numbers) was quite popular
  • Nickelodeons

    Nickelodeons
    These were called Nickelodeons because they would charge you a nickel to view them ( these were small storefront-type theaters that featured films that were usually accompanied by piano music and sound effects as well as 1-2 vaudeville acts to go with it) By 1910 these attracted over 26 million people, and 5 years later the number had doubled.

    This was the first actual movie. It had 14 scenes, and lasted 12 minutes. ( Considerd and Epic back then) It was directed by Edwin Porter.
  • Edison creates a Monopoly

    Edison creates a Monopoly
    Edison wantedto make more money, so he decided to create a Monopoly where he gained control over almost everything in the motion picture industry.Edison and some other companies formed the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) It eventually crumbled however whenever independant studios that had set up on the Westcoast decided to do the opposite of what the MPPC did with their actors and actresses, made them into stars.
  • Charlie Chaplin

    Charlie Chaplin
    He was the first 20th century superstar. Known as the comic genious of silent comedy. He started out only making $150 a week, but by 1917, he was making 1 million a year. He used his films to subtly communicate messages baout the good and evil in society.
