    Hollywood started with a $25000 bet. The bet was that horses have all four hooves off the ground at full speed. A picture was captured that proved this theory

    The first movie theatre in 1895. The "movies" we're more like flip books. Movies were for individuals. The movies were still pictures or drawing moved quickly in order to make it seem like a moving picture.
  • Cinematographs

    Cinematographs, 1895 created by the lumière brothers. Movies were 30-40 seconds long. the cost to watch these ovies or short films was 1 franc(french currency)
  • Nickelodeons

    Nickelodeons
    vaudevilles are small theaters featuring skits, comedy, song and dance. they were used between films to fill empty space. They shortly became nickelodeons In the early 1900's.

    Edwin Porter, a student of Edison, in 1903 made the first US narrative film, The Great Train Robbery. It used cross cutting and different camera positions. It had 14 scenes and was 12 minutes.
  • Monopolies

    In 1910 nickelodeons became popular. They attracted 26 million people a week. Created a monopoly led by Thomas Edison, because people were interested in making money off of the short films.
  • MPPC

    MPPC
    1915 the MPPC, Motion Picture Patents Company. That was led by Edison. Was a monopoly. They Did not allow independent film companies or theaters to produce films.
  • Charlie Chaplin

    Charlie Chaplin
    In 1917 Charlie Chaplin wasthe first movie superstar. He started at $150 a week. By the end of 1917 he made 1 million dollars a year.
  • West coast explanation

    West coast explanation
    Things moved to the west coast because it's sunny for films. It's out of control of the MPPC. If the MPPC tried to stop film makers in the west coast the film makers would speed to Mexico.
  • black listed

    In the 1950's some actors, writers and directors became blacklisted because they were suspected communists. Including Charlie Chaplin. Many of the blacklisted people fled to Europe.
  • Hollywood decline

    Hollywood decline
    In 1960's Hollywood declined. Films were being made in other countries. Family based movies were still popular and were hollywoods main source of income.
  • "New Hollywood"

    "New Hollywood"
    1970's created the "New Hollywood." Followed by another decline. As it rose again stories became more complex. more complex stories brought forth more viewers and brought hollywood back up.
