Boston Latin School becomes the first public school in the US.

1653

This changes the History of Education forever. This now means that students can learn now instead of working in the fields or around the house all day long.

Olberlin College was the first college to admit both men and women in the United States.

1833

This will change how we learn it may be more of a competition now because of men and women being in classes. They also might be able to learn new things because women would be used to learning about women things, and men learning about men things. They could learn from each other now and expand their learning.

The Pledge of Allegiance is used in public schools on Columbus Day

1892

This add to education was good because it taught kids that they need to show respect for their country. Even though sometimes you might not be happy about what is happening in your country I like that most teachers make the Pledge of Allegiance mandatory in their classrooms.

Mandatory school attendance laws were put in place.

1918

Mandatory school attendance was important because kids actually get to have a learning culture. They don't really have a choice anymore of going or not going to school.

All states have laws in place to provide public transportation for schools.

1919

This helped Education because kids that didn't have a ride to school were able to ride the bus home and not have to find a random ride, walk, or not go to school at all. Now kids are able to ride the bus to and from school and it helps parents and family members.

Free and reduced lunches were put in place.

1946

This is good for the Education because kids that might not be able to afford lunches can still eat.

Brown vs. Board of education was passed schools were desegregated from then on.

1954

Brown vs. Board changes the way that all kids no matter what their race or ethnicity is can learn in a same environment as white kids. This took time to change these law but now in current time we have gotten a lot better about this issue.

ACT was established

1959

This changed education history because now this is how you get into most colleges now. They all go off kids ACT scores and how high or low you can get them. I believe this is not a good way to get to know how smart a person actually is and I believe this was a not a good thing to happen to Education history but it has happen and we need to try and prepare kids better for it at younger ages.

First School House Rocks was aired.

1973

I choose this because I enjoyed watching School House Rocks during school. They seemed to teach me something because it was something different rather than a teacher talking in front of class.

The first online High School course was open.

1994

This changes educational history because kids will now be able to do classes online and not take them in a class. They can work at their own pace and do their assignments when they can. It also helps if kids are homeschool they can take online options as well as learning from their parent or parents.
