  • Educaiton in the Colonial Period

    Educaiton in the Colonial Period
During this time school was really only for the rich. Poorer people worked with their families rather than attend school. Primary school was very small and was more disciplinarian. After primary school if the person chose to continue, they did so through tutors rather than through another school
  • The Impact of Jefferson

Jefferson, although he was privately educated himself, believed that children should be educated, but he wa very specific in how. That boys should go to primary school and continue their educations at university if they desire. That women should got to about 3-4 year of school so that they are adequately trained and educated to be a mother, but that black people/children did not get that opportunity.
  • Northwest Land Ordinance

With the westward expansion, more families settled the land out west. There were now small towns and communities scattered all over what used to be open land. With the influx of settlement brought aobut the need for schools, so education young women came out to board with families in the towns, and teach all the children in whatever building they could find.
  • Common Schools

Common schools were brought about to be more nuturing than school previously, with more rigourous work to help students improve and become better adults. It called for higher educated teachers, as well as a more open environment.
  • The Impact of Horace Mann

    The Impact of Horace Mann
Horace Mann believed that school should be available to all children, and that it should teach more than just reading, writing and mathematics. He believed that students should attend school to improve their morals, character and social efficacy as well as learn the necessary knowledge. He also believed that schools should teach students to become upright citizens
  • Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th Century

Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th Century
During the time of immigration, the population of America more than doubled. And with this growth came more children needing schooling. In fact, a lot of families came here just so their children could receive an American education. The more children there were the more schools and teachers we needed, so this growth brought on a growth of schools, as well as the growth of importance of education.
  • Committee of Ten

This group brought about a regulation for the cirriculum in high schools. This impacts today's educaiton immensely as we now have the common core, which in my opinion seems to have built from this idea. That we as a nation should try to keep the cirriculum standard throughout the country so as to give equal opportunity to every student, no matter where they live.
  • The Impact of John Dewey

    The Impact of John Dewey
Dewey believed that students needed an education not only to gain an education but also to become better people, or to learn how to live. He believed that schools should teach students in a way that they can relate the knowledge to their own lives and make it more relevant to them. He believed that students should attend school to become matured.
  • The Progressive reform movement

    The Progressive reform movement
This follow very closely to what Dewey believed, but it was a movement focused on schools being a vital part of a democratic society. That they teach students in a way to make them better people, leaders and citizens of this nation. I think that this is huge in Education because it helps schools to realize that it should not only be for gaining textbook knowledge, but that it should also be there for students to become better people. http://www.uvm.edu/~dewey/articles/proged.html
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

This law suit brought about desegregated schools. Schools started to desegregate almost a century before this, but it wasn't a nation wide belief that children, regardless of color, should attend the school most available to them. There weren't a lot of resources to instill this act, but all children were now able to have equal opportunities
  • The Civil Rights Movement

This act gave the resources and means for all schools not only to desegregate, but to improve those schools. This act states that all people should be given equal opportunity in every aspect of life regardless of color, or orientation. Because of this act all students were now treated equally in regards to their education. They now had real equal opportunity in school
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
This act, in my opinion, is one of the most important acts that has come about. This act provides the necessary resources and money to schools so that all children have an equal opportunity to learn. It also brings about the need for less achievement gaps so that all students can learn equally and hopefully graduate at the same level. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elementary_and_Secondary_Education_Act
  • Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

This act made it possible for all students to receive the education they needed and the resources they needed to do so in regards to their own special needs. Before this act the amount of students with disabilities enrolled in schools was alarmingly low, something like 10-20%. Now with this act they were given all the resources and understanding that they would need to learn successfully.
  • A Nation at Risk

This is important because it showed the nation how we were compared to the rest of the country. It started up standardized testing and more rigourous class work because our country needed to be smarter than the other. This was a time when our country was full of mediocre people, so this act kicked the school back into gear.
  • No Child Left Behind

This act follow similarly what all other presidents/leaders wanted. That all students should have equal opportunity regardless of their situation. This act ensured that all students graduate at a certain reading and math level, and that they all will have the same oportunity to gain the knowledge as everyone else.
