History of Education

  • Education in the Colonial Period

    Only larger towns in England were required to build schools. They had Dane schools that were similar to what day cares are today. Most schooling during this time was religion related. They would learn from the bible. Only some older privlaged boys would continue and go on in school
  • Common Schools

    In Common Schools, a common body of knowledge was taught that would give all students an equal chance at life. All the students would come and learn at school together. The schools were free and high quality. The schools were funded by tax dollars. These schools were the start of chairs with backs, blackboards, and textbooks.
  • FIrst Education Laws

    This law was made to educate all Americans. With this law, there was three years of public education. This law was the start of education for many Americans. The first education laws were the first steps towards better education.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann
    This was an important event in education. Horace Mann was a politician. He became the first secretary of education. He would ride horse back from district to district checking all the schools. He visited 1000 schools in 6 years. He would write about each school he visited. He noticed that the schools had a lot of problems.
  • Growth of Education

    During this time there was a major growth in education. 4 million Americans were now free to become literate. All states were required to offer free education to children. The United States was providing the most school to the most children.
  • Legal Case Concerning Education

    Legal Case Concerning Education
    This was an important event. During this time, colored kids were not allowed to attened school with white kids. Sarah Robert's dad did not agree with this. Sarah's father was not the only one that felt like this. He fought for what he thought was right. A law was passed abolishing segregation in schools. This was a big landmark for American education.
  • The Gary Plan

    The Gary Plan was a new way of school. The students would go from class to class each hour. This plan was also known as Work, Study, Play. The students would experience different subjects. They also helped run the school by participating in things like yearbook and the newspaper.
  • Progressive Reform Movement

    During this time, kids were banned from child labor. All the kids that had been working were now sent to school. This movement brought a lot of kids, crowding the schools. Because of this, they had to change the practice of education.
  • The Impact of WW2

    When the war ended, they came up with seperate but equal schools. However, these schools were not equal at all. White kids were able to attend better quality schools. Black students were not able t have the same quality of education.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    It was decided that the 60 years of leagalized segregation needed to come to an end. It was declared that having seperate schools was unconstitutional. Although this was decided, the courts failed to inforce it. This sparked the American Civil Rights Movement.
  • War on Poverty

    An equal chance at education meant an equal chance at life. Federal programs were started to help students. The Civil Rights Act was signed. If schools did not desegregare, then they would loose their funding.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education

    President Johnson offered 4 billion dollars in funds to aid disadvantaged students. Doing this represented equality in the schools. If schools were not integrating, then their funds would be cut. This really helped the schools to integrate.
  • School Choice Movement

    School Choice Movement
    This was an important event in education. This movement made it so you were able to choose which school you attended. If a school is failing then it is closed down and fixed. PUblic schools started to get better because of all of the competition. More schools were opened up. The schools became smaller and more personalized. The students benefited a lot from this.
  • Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act
    This was an important event in education. Before this time, access to school was denied for those with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act provided free appropriate education for those with disabilities. This greatly impacted many lives, and protected rights. This Act lead to higher academics which led to higher outcomes. It also expanded methods for identifying students with specific disabilities.
  • A Nation at Risk

    A Nation at Risk
    This was an important event in education. This was a time of global competivenes. America started to fall behind other countries. Many of the schools were poor quality. Since this happened, they blamed the schools. Schools were not focusing on teaching their students important things, because there were so many other problems that America was focusing on. America tried to fix this by making the school days and year longer, and giving the students more homework.
