History of Education

  • Northwest Land Ordinance

    This gave rights of land to communities and settlers as long as they would set aside land for schools.
  • Common Schools

    This was a movement led by Horace Mann. It provide community provide education for children.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann was an advocate for education and found the common school journal which went over his six main principles. He was also a big influence on separate school and religion.
  • Morrill Land-Grant Act

    Morrill Land-Grant Act
    This Land act was given by President Lincoln in 1862 which allocate 17,400,000 acres of land for schools to use for higher education. This act provided the U.S. with some of the college we use today like Cornell University, and Kansas State. These schools offered many things in engineering and agriculture.   • 19th Century Immigration

    During this time, many people where moving to U.S. to have a chance for educations. This caused many schools to be over crowded and needed them to become larger.
  • Committee of Ten

    This was a committee of ten people of higher education. There purpose was to push for standardizing the curriculum of high schools.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey pushed for a new type of philosophy for school which was called Behaviorism.
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    Brown versus the board of education was a supreme court decision that said that it was unconstitutional to have segregated schools. This was started in Topeka, Kansas by a father name Oliver Brown. The NAACP asked families to try and enroll their children in the closest school.     This is the National Defense Education Act that provide a push for better math and science programs. This was a response to Russia sending sputnik to space.
  • ESEA

    ESEA
    This act is called Elementary and Secondary Education Act which was signed by President Johnson. This act give us our modern day terms we use for education, and this is used as the framework for many of our newer education bills. Also, this was used to fund school in low income areas so that students would have an equal chance on life.     The Individuals with Disabilities education act made schools take on the responsibility of education students with a disability. This has truly changed the way we have educated both students and teachers.     This was a commission enacted by President Reagan to report and deal with the problems of education. The focus was to bring it back to essentialism.
  • School Choice

    This was a movement that gave families a choice to which school their child went too. It also started the programs for vouchers.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    No child left behind was a bipartisan act to make schools improve within 10 years time period. It would mark schools as failing, and take away funding if the schools didn't make it to this point.
