  • Olympics Begin Testing

    During the Winter Olympics the International Olympic Committee begins to test athletes. No athlete tests positive.
  • IOC Bans Anabolic Steroids

    After finally getting a reliable test the IOC bans the use of anabolic steroids. Testing begins at the 1976 Games at Montreal.
  • Ben Johnson Stripped of Medal

    World champion sprinter Ben Johnson of Canada tests positive and has his gold medal stripped. He is banned for 2 years. In 1993 he tests positive for a second time and is banned for life.
  • Major League Baseball Bans Steroids

    Major League Baseball becomes the first major professional sport to ban the use of steroids.
  • Baseball Begins Testing

    The MLB Players Association begins testing players for steroids. No players are suspended and the results are kept secret.
  • MLB Begins Punishments

    MLB institutes punishments after a high number of players test positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs.
  • National Football League Begins Stricter Testing

    The NFL becomes the first professional sports league to implement blood testing of its players for PEDs such as Human Growth Hormone.
