History of Doncaster and Rowville railways

  • First idea for a Doncaster railway

    Inception of the idea for a railway to Doncaster. An extention was proposed of the Kew Branch line to Warrandyte, with a line running through Templestowe. The year was 1890-the exact date is unknown
  • Melbourne Transportation line proposes Rowville Line.

    In 1969, the Melbourne Transportation Plan proposed a railway from Huntingdale through Rowville, to Ferntree Gully on the Belgrave Line. This proposal was unsuccessful
  • Eastern Railway Construction Act passed.

    The Eastern Railway Construction Act of 1971 was passed by State Parliament, which set the route from the Eastern Freeway to Thompson's Road and through Templestowe to Blackburn Road.
  • Parliamentary report delivered recommending reconstruction of original route.

    The parliamentary report recommended for the original route plan, to be constructed as opposed to the six alternatives, after residents complained about the route running through the Eastern Golf course to Blackburn Road.
  • Liberal Party pledged to build the line, if elected.

    The Liberal Party decided to pledge that it would be the line, if the party was elected. However, the line would be only to Bulleen. However, by the following year, the cost of the line had increased to $73 million
  • Victorian Railways purchase eighteen properties for the Railway

  • Report on transport in the Eastern Freeway corridor presented.

    A report was presented to the Victorian transport minister, outlining plans for a heavy railway to Doncaster Shoppingtown, to Blackburn Road (East Doncaster) and an extension of North Balwyn.
    The report was deemed to be desirable but too expensive.
  • Public pressure mounts and councils give support for the railway line

    Following the state election of 2006, public pressure mounted and councils began to give their support for the construction of the line
  • Petition for Doncaster line delivered to parliament

    In March 2008, a petition consisting of 7,000 signatures was delivered by councilors to the Mnister of Transport Lynne Kosky.
  • State Labor government releases transport plan

    The transport plan, released by the State Labor Government, did not address the construction of the Doncaster Line.
  • Victorian Liberal Party promises committing $6.5m to another study for the Doncaster railway line

    The Victorian Liberal Party promised to commit $6.5m to complete another study to develop a route for building the railway line to Doncaster. This proposed for the Budget of 2011.
  • First stage of Rowville Rail Study report released

    The first stage of the released report, found that congestion on the Glen Waverly line and the Ferntree Gully line would reduce, as well as the Dandenong line, if the rail link was constructed.
  • Rowville Rail Study focused on rail link to Rowville

    The study focused on the possiblity of a rail link to Rowville.
    It was found that the study would cost $2 million.
  • No action taken to build either railway line.

    There has not been further plans to build either the Doncaster or Rowville Railway line.
