    First Comedy in Film
    Comedy and humour in films first started in the silent film era which appeared from 1895. The comedy in these silent films was down to the actions of the stars in them, a well known star of this era was Charlie Chaplin.

    Now that sound was starting to be introduced into film, verbal humour started to be added into the comedy genre, this lead to acts such as the Marcs Brothers (Shown in the picture) who where very well known for there comedy acts.

    Once films started to get bigger and some reach the people who had televisions, comedy's started to relate to every day life with the idea of making people feel better about having an average life.
  • Decline in comedy

    In the 1950's there was a 10 percent drop in comedy films, people where becoming more interested in the other genre that were on offfer and people started to think that the comedy was getting repetitive and old.
  • The increase in Film comedy

    In the 1960's the film comedy genre became increasingly popular once again, there was a borad number of new films that feautred new and different themed comedy such as sexual comedy that was not possible a few years before.

    In the 80's films began to get bigger as they became longer in length reaching times of up to two hours, people started going to the cinema alot more and enjoying the new comedys that where on offer.

    In the 90's there was a major developement of bringing back romantic comedy into production, this was incouraged by a film in the late 80's. Romantic comedies took a big effect on auidence and proved to be very popular.
  • Working Class Comedy

    Working Class Comedy
    In Britian working class comedy took the spotlight with films such as the Full monty taking a big grip on auidneces and displaying the fun in a group of guys working class lives.
  • Change in Comedy

    Comedy started to change and mix in with more modern subjects, for example 'Stoner' comedies became a big thing with many people doing films such as Harold and Kumar go to white castle and Pineapple exspress, they usually contained two friends that end up in some kind of mess and find there way out of it.

    Comedy has come far from silent films, today there are all kinds of comedies that range from basic jokes to zombie comedies, these all have different but massive audiences and the comedy genre is still as big as ever.
