    James L Shelton becomes the first black police officer in Chicago police history

  • Haymarket Riot

    Described as the worst day in Chicago Police Department history.Anarchist held a demonstration outside of Haymarket square and when police arrived to disperse the crowd somebody threw a bomb and winds up killing eight officers and 59 wounded.

  • Ambulance serviced organized

    Began with a donation from Ada Sweet when she provided funds for an ambulance station. CPD ambulance was simply a horse drawn wagon equipped with stretchers and bandages

  • First Police Automobile

    Department becomes motorized with 3 squad cars

  • Expansion of Motorized Vehicles

    Motorcycles and Boats are introduced and added to police vehicles

  • First Female Officers

    10 woman take the oath to become the first female police officers(Alice Clement is most famous)

  • Eastland Disaster

    S.S. Eastland was a ship that was headed to Michigan City for a sponsored excursion picnic holding over 2,500 people through tickets and some 7,000 tickets were sold through family and friends. When most of the boarders went to one side of the boat to take a picture the ship started to tip and proceeded to fall to the floor of the Chicago River trapping passengers under. Some passengers would jump and others didn't make it. In the end of everything 844 people perished including 22 families

  • A Dangerous Era ( 1920-1939)

    More than 40 percent of Chicago Police officers lost their lives in the line of duty

  • First Crime Laboratory

    Seven men were murdered in Chicago north side garage. The investigation resulted in the creation of the nations first crime laboratory located at NorthWestern University

    Cadet Program is introduced

  • First Female officer killed in line of duty

    Patrolman Dorelle C. Brandon, star #2684, was shot and killed in a dispute with an offender

  • Crime Reduction Strategy

    To combat gangs and guns Chicago introduced weekly DOC/VICE meetings.
