HISTORY OF CELL THEORY

  • Zacharias Jansen

Spectacle maker from the Netherlands, came up with the first compound microscope and telescope
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

Made his own microscope and observed bacteria from dental scrapings, which he called "animacules". he sent his findings to Robert Hooke.
  • Robert Hooke

Coined the term "cell" while looking at a piece of cork under a microscope. was underappreciated as he constantly debated with Sir Isaac Newton on many different subjects.
  • Mattias Scheiden and Theodor Schwann

Schieden was a botanist, and after many years of observing plans under a microscope, he realized that all plants were made of cells.
Schwann studied animal cells, and he also realized that all animals are made up of snails.
the two scientists got together and after a lot of experiments, started to form THE CELL THEORY.
they did argue on one fact: Schwann (rightfully) believed that all cells come from preexisting cells. Schieden believed in free cell formation. Rudolph Virchow proved him wrong.
