    The moa have become hunted to extinction about 600 years ago. The maori used to eat them and hunt them since they were so big and slow walkers.
  • James Cook goes to Canterbury

    On the 16th of February, 1770, James Cook's ship lands in Canterbury. He thought it was an island and later discovered it wasn't
  • Captain William Rhodes Settles in Canterbury

    In 1836, Capt. William Rhodes arrives in Canterbury. A few years later, he brings a gorup of farmers with him.
  • Canterbury Association Formed

    The idea of that was that new immigrants and settlers could purchase land. This could help the public make hospitals, roads, and schools
  • First Hotel

    Called the White Hart

    When the govenment finally agreed, road work started to begin for the Lyttelton tunnel, it ended in 1867
