  • The First Known Athletic Traner

    The First Known Athletic Traner
    James Robinson was hired by Harvard University as the athletic trainer and gave the field it's first roots. Before Robinson, injuries to athletes were treated by coaches or a team physician. Most of the time, athletic trainers also coached one or more sports teams.
  • Original NATA

    Original NATA
    There was a brief National Athletic Training Association was founded in 1938. It was short lived because of World War II. There was no time to thouroughly develop the program so it failed. Many athletic trainers were used to help prepare soldiers for war. The pressures of the war pushed the career of athletic training back to a group of people used for training people in physical conditioning.
  • National Athletic Trainging Association

    National Athletic Trainging Association
    NATA National Athletic Training Month 2010The National Athletic Training Association was founded in 1950 by about 200 athletic trainers who gathered in Kansas City to discuss the future of Atheltic Training. The NATA has headquarters in Dallas, TX and they help set the standards for Athletic Trainers across the country. There is a membership of people all over the globe made up of about 30,00 people who help to advance the profession. March is also the National Athletic Training month.
  • Merging NATA and NCAA

    Merging NATA and NCAA
    The National Athletic Training Association adopted a code of ethics just one year after establishing their journal of scholarly research and discourse. They also aligned their organizations including the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). Their plan was to help bring athletic training into the mainstream of sports medicine.
  • 1st female Athletic Trainer

    1st female Athletic Trainer
    Kristine Freeman was the first female athletic trainer at the University of Florida She worked with the women's sports teams and only helped out a little with the men's athletic teams. Her father worked for Cramer Products.
  • Athletic Training in the Olympics

    Athletic Training in the Olympics
    At a District IX meeting in Atlanta, the commitee mentions NATA representatives for events like the Olympics.
  • Mimi Porter

    Mimi Porter
    Mimi Porter was hired by the University of Kentucky as an Athletic Trainer for the women's sports. She was also certified in 1976 and became the 16th female in the nation to become a certified Athletic Trainer. In 1976 Mim was the first female mentioned in the records to attend the District IX meeting in Boston on June 12, 1976.
  • Separate Departments

    Separate Departments
    The Univeristy of Tennessee-Knoxville hired Patricia "Trish" Darlington and Rita DeDamio as assistants for the women's Athletic department. They worked alongside Tim Kerin from the men's Athletic department but the two departments remain separated to this day. In 1978 the university made a full-time position for the women's Athletic Department.

    Athletic Training becomes an allied profession
    Athletic Training was not recognized as an allied profession until the year 1991.
  • Becoming an AT

    Becoming an AT
    Over the past few decades, many collages have established an athletic training majors for students. Certification used to be base on a student completing an internship but in 2004 that changed. The only way a student can sit for the national crtification exam is if they have graduated from an accredited athletic training education program.
