  • Boston’s first public school 1635

    The first public school is America. This school offered free education to anyone of any kind. This was a great advantage for people to get greater general education.
  • Quaker Friends Public Schol 1689

    When this school was established, it based in education around something a little different. Founded in Philadelphia, this school believes spiritual, social, and intellectual growth are linked, and they are very important in child development
  • Common Schools Movement 1837

    The effort fund schools in local communities with public dollars. This started systematic public schooling around America.
  • Board of Edu. V Rowley 1892

    The supreme court decided that free public education should be accessible to all handicapped (disabled children). This also means they are allowed special services.
  • The progressive Era 1896 – 1917

    A period I the US during the 20th century. This spread social activism and political reform around the country. This era led to a greater emphasis on student creativity in education. People were becoming more educated as they extended schooling beyond primary level.
  • Brown vs Board 1954

    This was a court case during Civil Rights Movement. This decision by the supreme court desegrated schools by allowing African American to attend the same schools as white children, because spreading public schools by race was unconstitutional.
  • Civil Rights Movement 1954 – 1968

    During this era, African American fought for their place in society against racial discrimination. People were working to ear equal rights, as they were being treated unfairly. This included working to desegregate schools across America.
  • Egle v Vitale 1962

    In this case, the supreme court decided its unlawful for schools to compose an official school prayer ad require children to participate.
  • Tinker v Des Moines 1969

    Two student wore black armbands to peacefully protest while at school. Staff had told them to take them off and prohibited the students from wearing them. Although, the supreme court declared that this was justified, This ties into dress code laws today.
  • Lemon v Kurzman 1971

    Teachers cannot receive supplementary salaries because of religious reasons. Teachers in private schools and catholic school could earn more while teaching public school courses.
  • Plylerv Doe 1982

    States cannot constitutionally deny students a free public education on account of their immigration status.
  • New Jersey vs TLO 1985

    A case that was taken to the supreme court rights. This case gives school administration the right of search and seizure under reasonable circumstances.
  • United States v Lopez 1995

    Took down the law that prohibits guns in school zone
  • No Child Left Behind act 2001

    A law passed by George Bush that holds schools more responsible for the student’s performance. States must test students in reading ad match (grades 3-12)
  • Forest Grove School District v T.A. 2009

    This permitted that, if a special education could not give the proper fee education at public school, they will be reimbursed in private education services
