  • Jefferson, Rush & Webster

    Thomas Jefferson made a great impact on the American Education. He made a bill for more generalized diffusion. Rush, a professor at Philedelphia college, established a system of schools. Webster created a spelling book making the english language what it is now.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann bio
    Horace Mann was known as "The Father of American Education". He was the spokesperson for common schools. He campagned to increase public support for education and public awareness. He improved textbooks and equipment and fought for professional training for teachers.
  • Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th century

    Between 1830-1860, American had a large population growth. Territory was added to America. It went from 13 million to 32 million. Many people were coming from Ireland, Gemany, and Europe. The industry was growing largly.
  • Common Schools

    During this time education systems began to take form. State stystems were established. Common Schools were controlled by the state and funded by taxes
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey was a professor at the University of Chicago. He rejected old subject centered curriculum. His goal of education was to promote individual growth, and consider emotional, social, and physical needs of a child.
  • Committee of Ten

    The need to assimilate children placed pressure on schools. In an effort to standardize the curriculum, the committee of ten was established. Each member was to meat certain qualifications.
  • The Gary Plan

    Superintendent, William Wirt of Gary Indiana. The Gary Plan was a plan to make more efficient use of school facilities, a reform of the Progressive Movement that was widely adopted in other cities.
  • World War ll

    World War ll greatly impacted education. Many teachers left classes for battle and student enrollment dropped. Financial support for education was low.

    Sputnik was the first artificial sattelite launched by the soviet union. It confirmed a fear in America that the U.S was loosing the cold war because of a shortage o teachers, engineers and students in schools. The NDEA sponsored efforts to revise the curriculum and revise math, chemistry, and grammer.

    Standardized testing is the most commonly used and well known method of testing.

  • No Child left Behind

    No Child Left Behind ActThe No Child Left Behind Act required that all states have deceloped standards for what every child should know and learn in math and reading. Students must be tested anually to determine their proress in meeting the standards. It was replaced by the "Every student succeeds Act" in 2015
