Proto or pre-Renaissance refers to a time period just before the beginning of the Renaissance era in Northern Italy. Notable happenings in that era include: change in people's way of thinkng, an introduction to Renaissance styled art and it paved the way for the Renaissance era.

The Turkish were successful in the Battle of Nicopolis. A battle between the Turkish, a part of the Ottoman Empire, and 60,000 Hungarian, English, Italian, Polish, German and French soldier, who intended to steal the city of Nicopolis but did not succeed and the Turkish won, claiming ownership of Bulgaria.
