  • Period: 710 to 794

    Nara period

    The first emperor of the Nara period was emperor genmei.
    The first major capital city was made in this time, it was called heijo.
    Heijo is also called Nara which is why the period goes by the same name.
  • Period: 794 to 1185

    Heian period

    The Heian period’s first emperor was emperor Kanmu. Kanmu was then followed by 32 other emperors from this period. During this time there was a five year war between the two biggest clans; the Minamoto and Taira clans.
  • Period: 1185 to 1333

    Kamakura period

    minamotot no yoritomo was the first emperor of this period. He was part of the minamoto clan; the winners of the 5 year war.
    Buddisum became a very popular religion during this period.
  • Period: 1333 to 1573

    Muromachi period

    The first emperor in this time period was emperor Go-Diago. Go-Diago wanted to put the emperor back at the top of the feudal system because the shogun had taken over.
    There was a civil war in the capital of Kyoto that went for ten years. It was started because the shogun got a bit weaker, half said good half said bad and then... civil war.

    Azuchi-momoyamo

    Oda Nobunaga Was the first emperor of the Azuchi-momoyamo period. He was then killed by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide and replaced by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. From 1576 to 1579 Azuchi Castle was constructed and was a symbol of peace and unification.

    Edo period

    The first emperor of the edo period was Go-Mizuo. The shogun during the time of this emperor banned Christianity, books and foreign travel were also banned during this time. Those were some of the many things that were banned another was ship building.

    Meiji

    There was only one emperor during this time, Meiji was his name. Meiji means enlightened ruler. During this time there was a “restoration” and school was compulsory, leading to most of the people in Japan able to read and write. All men could now vote publicly as well.
