    1941 - A.Philip Randolph threatened to lead a protest on Washington; Roosevelt signed the executive order #8802 (the Fair Employment Practice in Defense Industries Act, which established the Fair Employment Practices Committee). End racial discrimination in federal government and defense industries. 1948 - the US government ordered full integration of its Armed Forces (no more segregation).

    American Naval victories at the Battle of the Coral Sea and aircraft carrier duel at the Battle of Midway crippled Japan's Pacific Naval Operations. At the Guadalcanal, American and Japanese soldiers faced vicious combat from both sides; many Japanese fighter pilots and soldiers chose suicidal actions instead of facing surrender.

    The Cold War had long roots. US intervenes with military against the red army during the Russian revolution, and the US didn’t recognize the Soviet Union when it was founded in 1922. These countries were brought together by enemy uprising, but once they destroy the enemy there was no common ground.

    This prestigious council included: The Soviet Union, The United States, Britain, France, and China. July 1944 - UN financial and monetary conference created International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and World Trade Organization. The Soviets rejected all the plans.

    Operation Overlord: D-Day
    American, British, and Canadian Forces launched Operations Overlord (D-Day) which was the invasion of France. Dwight Eisenhower was one of the American generals serving at the time. Allied Forces landed at Normandy which proved to be successful in fighting the Nazis. The Nazi army was crumbling on both fronts.

    World War 2 Summary of Events in 1945

    January; The Soviet Army reached Germany.
    March; American troops crossed Rhine.
    April; Soviets and Americans met in Elbe and drove Germans back to Berlin.
    May; Hitler committed suicide in a German bunker in Berlin.
    European War was over! Germany had been conquered!
    Three months later, Stalin agreed to help the U.S. in the fight against Japan.

    The Manhattan Project & The Potsdam Conference
    Fearing that Germans would develop the atomic bomb, US government launch: the Manhattan Project (developing and testing the atomic energy and create weapon to flatten entire cities). Potsdam Conference near Berlin: President Truman received word that the Manhattan project had successfully tested an atomic bomb. Stalin nodded in agreement, and hoped Americans would make good use of it.
  • Hiroshima & Nagasaki Bombings

    Hiroshima & Nagasaki Bombings
    On August 6, the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Japan. On August 9, the US dropped more atomic bombs on Nagasaki, Japan. August 15: Japan surrendered to the US.
    September 2: aboard the battleship USS Missouri, Japanese delegates officially signed their surrender to the US. WWII was over!

    The Korean War

    The North Koreans launched attack on Seoul (South Korean capital) which fell to the communist on June 28. UN passed resolutions demanding that North Korea cease hostilities and withdraw his armed forces to the 38th parallel line. Fighting continued with the DPRK and ROK constantly crossing the 38th parallel line into each other’s territories. Finally on July 27, 1953 and armistice agreement was signed by the Soviet Union in the US. More than 1.5 million people died during the conflict.
