It was important because until then, it was believed impossible to transmit anything further than 200 miles under as it would be blocked by the curvature of the earth.

On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane which was 20 feet above a beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. The brothers began their experimentation in flight in 1896. This invention was significant in the development of new technologies, new ways of battle, modern warfare and it was a more efficient way of travel.

On December 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer with his team to stand at the South Pole. By the route, he discovered a glacier later named the Axel Heiberg Glacier. Amundsen and his crew resumed the journey in August 1906 and were greeted as heroes when the expedition concluded in Alaska, beating Robert Falcon Scott his British rival.
