    FIRST BILINGUAL AND BICULTURAL SCHOOL
    Coral Way Elementary school, in Miami, modifies it's curriculum to become the first Bilingual and Bicultural School. Coral Way welcomed Cuban refugees as students. Half the student body was hispanic and all students shared classes conducted in both English and Spanish.

    ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT
    Act provided financial help to low-income families, promoting and enabling education for a wider student body. Two years later, an amendment was added, providing for Bilingual Education programs.

    Modified the US immigration quotas removing restrictions that discriminated against immigrants from non-european countries. This change allowed strong growth in racial diversity.

    A survey conducted to assess the level of equality in educational opportunities between children of different racial and socio-economic backgrounds. This study started the path to busing student of color into white neighborhoods.

    This act made it a legal requirement that schools offer bilingual education. This was an attempt to improve educational equality for non-native english speakers.

    Recognized that Native American and Alaskan student have special educational needs that take native culture into account. The cultural needs included consideration and support of native languages.

    A non-profit organization that advocates for equal treatment and educational opportunities for all students. Provides funding for bilingual education programs.
  • PLYLER VS. DOE

    PLYLER VS. DOE
    Supreme court case protecting the right of undocumented children to an education. Also prohibits requiring tuition fees from these children. Supreme court found the state of Texas to be in violation of the14th amendment of the Constitution.

    IMPROVING AMERICAS SCHOOLS ACT
    This act re-authorized the Elementary ans Secondary Education Act. Increased funding for bilingual education programs and supports for quality educators amongst other provisions.
