In 1538 Hernando heard tales of gold in Florida. Hernando set out with 600 men and over 100 horses in 4 ships. They landed in Tampa bay, Florida in 1539 and marched northwards in search of gold. They marched for nearly four years! When they arrived in Tampa Bay De Soto faced a long march. Many of his men died.
