    Israel Invades
    The army in Israel received information that Hamas was collecting weapons and arms in the Gaza strip so they invaded and arrested Yassin, a leader of Hamas. Unfortunately for Isreal, Yassin was released a year later and he continued his movement. These tanks were used to gather Hamas supplies.
  • Foundation

    Foundation
    Hamas was founded in 1987 as a branch of Muslim Brotherhood. Sheik Ahmed Yassin, who is shown in this image, and the other founders were focused on the principles of Islamic Fundamentalism as it was becoming popular in Arabia. The founders wanted to eventually control the Palestinian movement and destroy Israel. The group is active in the Gaza Strip.

    Military Formation
    The Hamas military wing is refered to as the "Students of Ayyash." The armed soldiers call themselves by this name in commemoration of Yahya Ayyash, who was a bomber for Hamas. He was killed in 1996. Through this military organization, the fighting capability of Hamas has drastically increased with weapons and fighters.

    Goldstein Influences Hamas
    There was a massacre by Baruch Goldstein of 30 Muslims that directly influenced the decision of the Hamas leaders to use suicide attacks as their primary mode of operation. Throughout the 1990s, suicide bombings of Hamas (shown here) became well-known nationally as they occured in Israel against the military and civilians.

    Hamas Suicide Attacks
    After the Israelis killed Hamas leader Ayyash at the beginning of this year, Hamas came back for revenge. From February to March, Hamas killed 47 Israelis in a series of three suicide attacks. This event only infuriated Israel more. The picture shows the rising smoke in Israel from one account of the bombing from Hamas.
  • Shehadeh Killed

    Shehadeh Killed
    On this date, Hamas leader Salah Shehadeh was killed. An Israel bomb was dropped on his home in Gaza. 14 Others lost their lives as well. This photograph was taking of the remains of Shehadeh's home after the bombing. Hamas grievers are surrounding the ruins.
  • Yassin Killed

    Yassin Killed
    In Gaza City, Israel commenced an air strike against the Hamas group. As a result, chief Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was targeted and killed along with a few others. Other Hamas membered were injured as well. Yassin was shot by a driect hit from a helicopter and this image shows the spot of his death. Palestinians took the street in anger after the occurence.

    Possible Hamas Attack on the U.S.
    Ismail Selim Elbarasse, a memeber of the Hamas group, was arrested on this date after his wife was caught videotaping the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland. The images captured details and close up structures of the bridge. The FBI was very concerned with this because other terrorist groups like al-Qaeda were recruiting Hamas members for anti-american attacks.
  • Israel Fights Back

    Israel Fights Back
    Hamas and Israel began a six month agreement that resulted in a great reduction of rocket attacks. Immediately after this time period, Hamas resumed its attacks that were similar to the picture. This caused Israel to launch a military operation against Hamas on this date. Israel destroyed much of the Gaza Strip and then declared a cease-fire.
  • Fatah and Hamas Government

    Fatah and Hamas Government
    Fatah and Hamas agreed to form a government together. The two groups held elections and they renewed their plegde in February of 2012. Snce then, Hamas has left its headquarters in Damascus and has dispersed throughout the region.
