    Spainish conqust and enslavement the Taino population reduced to 60,000 people by 1517. But it was droping over centuries and by 1592 there was only 200 Tainos.

    Saint-Domingue and Sainto-Domingo
    The Treaty of Ryswich, France gained control of one third of Hispaniola and named it Saint-Domingue and the spainsh was Sainto-Domingo

    The affrancies had demanded equal rights with whites based on the Declaration of the Rights of Man the Citizen. The representatives of the affranchis travel to France to ask for the rights from the french government but was denied.

    He was a rebel leader and he joined Spain to defeat frances attempt to re-capture the colony and begin slavery.

    Slavery is abolished
    France officially abolishes slavery in France and its colonial possessions and Toussaint L'Ouverture joined the French forces under banner of emancipation and equal rights for blacks.

    Spain signed the Treaty of Basel with France which it gave its colony of Santo Domingo to France and took its troops from the island.

    Napoleon is under pressure from the French Merchants to re capture Saint-Domingue and re-establish slavery. This is also when the war of knives begins.

    L'Ouverture makes a new consitutuon were it abolishes slavery, all citizens have equal rights, and outlaws practice of voodoo. Lastly Napoleon views this as a threat and dosent recoginze it.

    The french invade Saint Domingue and try to re establish French power. This leds to L'Ouverture arrest and is brought to prison where he dies in prison. Lastly, Napoleon brings slavery back and organize mass resistance against French forces.

    French forces admit defeat and evacute the island.

    Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaims haitis independence and he is the new emperor of Haiti.
