    Grover Carter was born February 8, 1893. His mother was Viola and the father was James S. Carter. He was born in Selmer, Tennessee. He was the youngest of seven children.
  • Grover becomes a physician

    Grover becomes a physician
    Grover had a family tradition and he followed it and became a physician. He became a physician after he graduated from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee in 1912. He then entered Tennessee College of Medicine (1913), graduating with his M.D. in June of 1917

    Great Britain has been in the war for over three years and was sorely in need of medical officers.

    The two sides got together and they made a truce and exchanged greetings. Over 1000 soldiers experienced this.

    This is the first time large amounts of gas was used. The Germans used Chlorine gas and shot it at the allied lines. The
    french lines collapsed but the Germans was not able to use its advantage.

    The British was the first to use the tanks in battle. They were good for breaking through barbed wire and clearing pathways for the soldiers. They was not really good as a weapon unfortunately.

    They had secretly shipped 36 tanks at Somme. The tanks were not very dependable at war. They had malfunctions, and they hampered with the tanks effectiveness.
  • Grover serves internships

    He then served and internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. After he served at the hospital then he joined his brothers, Hugh and Parvin in their medical practice.
  • The U.S. finally joins

    The U.S. finally joins
    The United States declared war against Germany. When the United States joined, they joined on the side of France and Britain.

    Diary event: High Velocity shell hit
    Ready for breakfast when a H.V. [high velocity shell] got a direct hit on our house. Buried 6 men but no one hurt. Officers were all covered by dust and glass. Left here & went to funk holes 2in a field. I stopped a big piece with my tin hat. Very cold in the holes & nothing to eat but bully beef & tea. Left late in the p.m. for a new position. Much quieter. Good dinner & good sleep.

    The Germans fired a shell and killed one man. The U.S. hid in trenches for 2 hours while the Germans continued to fire at them.

    They went to a parade during the war. They went to Doulins, then to the river for a swim.
  • Canadian Hospital was hit

    Canadian Hospital was hit
    About ½ [mile] away a Canadian hospital was hit in the operating room during an operation. 4 drs., 4 nurses & 17 others killed
  • Shelled

    Shelled
    They went to batteries and they were getting shelled but they was not getting hit. They destroyed their huns after raiding up front.
  • Grovers Death

    Grovers Death
    He died by a massive explosion by a shrapnel. He was buried at the American Cemetery.
