Edwin Wiley Grove was born in Whiteville, Tennessee, in 1850 and moved to Paris, Tennessee in 1874. Grove made a fortune from his two pharmaceutical formulas--Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic and Grove's Bromo-Quinine tablets. In 1905, Edwin Wiley Grove purchased 408 acres in North Asheville, including what would become The Grove Park Inn. However, he would concentrate on residential neighborhoods before ever considering building a hotel.
