    The signing of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment
    ACUPCC President Modesto A. Maidique signed the ACUPCC Colleges and universities, are deeply concerned about global warming and its potential for adverse effects.     President Modesto A. Maidique established an FIU Climate Commitment Task Force to carry out the first two years of the commitment.

    Green Tailgating and Football Game
    Partnered with Student Government Association and Students for Environmental Action to provide recycling during tailgating and have green announcements and give-a-ways during the football game.
  • FIU Sustainability Committee appointed

    Sustainability Committee The FIU Climate Commitment Task Force Fulfilled the first tow years. New FIU President, Mark B. Rosenberg appointed a Sustainability Committee that consists of 6 students, 6 faculty, and 6 staff. The committee’s main charge is to recommend policies and procedures to the President regarding the integration of environmental sustainability into its operations, education, research, and outreach.
  • FIU's first LEED building open

    FIU's first LEED building open
    LEED Buildings at FIU Academic Health Center 3 (Nursing and Health Sciences) building opened and achieved LEED Silver Certification. Some of the features include, a partial green roof, high efficiency lighting, and ultra low flow water fixtures.

    Competed in the competition division of RecycleMania. Placed 2nd in the state for total pounds recycled. FIU averaged recycling 55,000 pounds a week
  • Tree Campus USA designation

    Tree Campus USA designation
    Tree Campus USA FIU was the first university in Florida to recieve the Tree Campus USA designation by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
  • Electronics Recycling Drive

    Partnered with an FIU Honor's College student to hold FIU's first Electronics Recycling Drive.
    Over a twoday period, over 1,200 pounds of old electronics were collected and taken to a local recycling facility.
  • FIU’s Office of University Sustainability created

    The process began of establishing a full-time FIU Office of University Sustainability.

    FIU participated in the national America Recycles Day by hosting its second Electronics Recycling Drive.

    Competed in the competition division RecycleMania. Came in first in the Sunbelt Conference. Over 438,700 pounds recycled during the 10 week competition.

    The FIU Sustainability Committee funded the free bike repair shop for the IDEAS club. The office of University Sustainbility works with them to set up the shop at the weekly Farmers Market.

    U2 Green Team
    FIU recruited 15 volunteers to help the U2 360 Tour promote recycling and sustainability at their concert at Sun Life Stadium.
  • Coral Gables Chmber Eco Expo & Green Awards

    Had a table to promote sustainability initiatives at FIU as part of the Eco Expo. FIU also recieved an award for the 2011 Solar Decathlon House.

    First Tailgate of the season. During all the home football games the FIU GoGreen Team gathers a team of volunteers to place recycling bins through out the FIU tailgate area and the entrance points of the stadium. It has been very successfull with ovewhleming demand and we hope to expand the program for next year.

    Office of Unviersity Sustainability, FIU Bikes, the FIU Rec Center, the FIU bookstore, and Kmart partnered up to promote biking as a healthy and sustainable commuter option. The event happened during the econd week of the semester for 3 days.

    The Office of University Sustainability helped a student host an electronics recycling drive for two days. During that time over 1,900 items were collected to be recycled.
