Giver Timeline

  • Jonas sees Red

    Jonas, the main character of the story sees red for the first time. This has a major impact on the story, as he is one of the two people in the community that can see color.

  • Jonas is skipped in the Ceremony

    At his Ceremony of 12, Jonas is skipped over before being given the job of Receiver of Memory. This event includes every main and side character in the story, besides Gabriel.

  • Jonas meets the Giver

    Jonas meets the current holder of the worlds memories, who calls himself the Giver, his gives Jonas a set of instructions that he is to live by, this includes lying to others, something not allowed in the Community.

  • Jonas is given his first memory

    Jonas is given his first memory, that of snow, by the Giver. This is very important as he is now becoming what he was assigned to do by the Elders of the Community.

  • Jonas gives Gabriel a memory on accident

    Jonas wakes up to Gabriel crying at night, holding him by his back Jonas accidentally passes him a memory. This is special due to the fact that most people can not receive memories, it is in very special cases people can be given memories.

  • The Giver tells Jonas about his daughter, Rosemary

    The Giver tells Jonas about his daughter who was once selected as the Receiver, then was released, as she did not want the pain of the memories.

  • Jonas witnesses a Release for the first time

    The Giver shows Jonas what truly happens when a person is Released, they are injected with chemicals and killed, not sent to another place.

  • Jonas plans his escape

    Jonas confides in the Giver that he wishes to escape and release all of the memories he has accumulated over the year of training.

  • Jonas finds out that the community plans to Release Gabriel

    Jonas chooses to take Gabriel with him in order to save him from death, as he believes that Gabriel is special and should not die, just because he is different.

  • The Giver starts to hoard food to help Jonas escape

    The Giver starts to keep food from his meals in order for Jonas to be able to eat on his long journey ahead. This is against the rules, although the Giver does not have to abided by any rule he does not want to.

  • Jonas and Gabriel evade the search for them

    Jonas and Gabriel brave the wilderness as well as planes and foot patrols searching for them both, as no one is allowed to leave the Community.

  • Jonas and Gabriel find the Wall of Memory

    Jonas and Gabriel come across a shimmering wall, that keeps the memories of the past from coming back into the Community.

  • Jonas and Gabriel escape the Community

    Jonas and Gabriel escape by stealing Father's bicycle and some food from diner, riding far out into Elsewhere, being the first people to leave in generations.

  • Jonas and Gabriel start to starve and freeze in the wilderness

    After Jonas and Gabriel run out of food while a snow storm starts to set in and begin to freeze them to death.

  • Jonas and Gabriel find a sled on top of a hill next to a house

    On the Brink of death Jonas and Gabriel find a sled atop a hill and ride it down to a home where there is singing and possible help, leaving the book on a cliff hanger, not knowing their fate.
