Geologic time drawing

Geological Timescale Timeline Project

  • Precambrian - 4,600 MA

Nearly half of the valuable mineral deposits in the world occur in the rocks of this period. The presence of stromalites indicates that shallow seas covered much of Earth during intervals in this period.
  • Cambrian - 542 MA

There is very little plant life during this period/epoch. Shelled brachiopods appear.
  • Ordovician - 488 MA

colonies of tiny intervertabres call graptolites florished and vertibrates appear, fish did not have jaws or teeth and their bodies were covered with bony plates.
  • Silurian - 444 MA

Vacular lands plants and animals, such as scorpions begin to evolve on land. Eurypterids, sea stars, and coral become more common.
  • Devonian - 416 MA

Huge plants begin to develop, early amphibians form. Age of fish, fish that can breathe out the water and spend time on land form
  • Mississpian - 359 MA

Amphibians flourish; amphibians appear; giant horsetails, ferns, and seed-hearing plants develop.
  • Pennsylvanian - 318 MA

Giant cockraoches appear. Coral deposits form.
  • Premian - 299 MA

Enviromental change causes mass extinction of sea invertibrates (trilobites & eurypterids) as the sea levels retreat. Appalachian Mountains are created because of the collison of tetonic plates and savannaths.
  • Triassic - 251 MA

Dinosaurs first appear, squirrel sized dinosaurs and first forrest dwelling mammals appear. Icythosaurs are living in the ocean, new inverterbrates call ammonite develop. D
  • Jurrasic - 200 MA

Lizard Hipped and Bird-Hipped appear - carnivores and herbivores have arrived. Flying reptiles called pterosaurs are in the air now.
  • Cretaceous - 146 MA

    First flowering plants appear angiosperm.
  • Paleocene - 65.5 MA

First primates evolve. World wide temperatures drop about 4 degrees celsius.
  • Eocene - 55.8 MA

Squirrels, Whales and bats appear. Small rodents evolve.
  • Oligocene - 33.9 MA

many early animals become extinct, clams and snails flourish. Himalays develop due to uplifting caused by the Indian subcontinent and Eurasian continents colliding.
  • Miocene - 23.0 MA

Antartic icecaps begin to form. Mediterranen Sea dries up and refills several times due to tectonic forcesa dn dropping sea levels.
  • Pliocene - 5.3 MA

Various species migrated between continents across land bridges. First modern horses appear
  • Pleistocene - 1.8 MA

Species that did not evlove to survive extreme cold moved to warmer climate areas or became extinct (Dire Wolf & Giant ground sloth) Homosaipen appeared and are hunters
  • Holocene - 0.0115 MA

Modern human developed agriculture and used tools made of bronze and iron. The last glacial period ended and sea levels rose, Great Lakes formed
  • Anthropocene - Current Day

Some scientist think it began with the industrial age in the early 1800s others think it began with the Atomic age in the 1950's. Scientist believe Human kind has caused mass extinctions of plant and animal species, polluted the oceans and altered the atmosphere.
