Galileo was the first of seven children to be born to Guila and Vincenzio Galilei. Vincenzio came form a wealthy family that had for generations been part if the ruling class. Little is known about Guila who came from the cloth-merchant Ammannati family.

Galileo entered the university to study medicines.One day while sitting in a cathedral he was observing a lamp hanging from the ceiling swaying back and forth and reaching the same point each time. He would later apply this to his theory of pendelums to clocks.

Galileo went against Aristotle and the church when he questioned Aristotles idea that heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects. He conducted and experiment by dropping items of different weights and they fell at the same speed.

Months before he went completely blind Galileo discovered that the moon did in fact make liberations. He was observing through his telescope, which he usually had done, he could the make the conclusion that the moon spins.
