Creating Carter's greatest foriegn policy crisis, U.S. backed Shah was overthrown in an Islamic revolution headed by the religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini. Revolutionaries took 52 American hostages from the U.S. Embassy and held them for 444 days. -

This occured in reaction to the U.S.S.R.'s decision to invade Afghanistan and start a war there. Carter placed the ultimatum that the United States would boycott the Moscow Olympics if Soviet troops did not withdraw from Afghanistan within one month.
