The History of Freedom Riders By chris jarrett May 4, 1961 On May 4, 1961, a group of 7 African-American and 6 whites got on two interstate buses heading south. and their detination was New Orleans May 9, 1961 In Rock Hill SC, it was the first sign of violence May 13, 1961 The riders arrived to Atlanta and stayed for a day before moving on May 14, 1961 In Anniston,Alabama the buses were attacked and one was firebombed. Also, the freedom riders were beaten May 15, 1961 The riders arrived in Montgomery,Alabama and they were beaten again. The federal Marshals arrive. Abernathy and kind lead the mass rally to fight back May 24, 1961 They arrive in Jackson,Mississippi and mass arrests happened in bus terminal. May 24, 1961 New volunteers arrived in Jackson to replace the others but they were arrested too and the Freedom Riders died out May 24, 1961 Attorney General Robert Kennedy sent federal marshals to protect the Freedom Riders May 25, 1961 Kennedy pressured the Interstate commerce Comission to issue a ruling that doesnt allow segregation in all interstate transportation May 25, 1961 The Justice Department sued local comunities that did not follow that rule
