Laura gets caught eavsdropping on Bert and Joel's conversation and finds out that her house now is a santcuary for slaves.

Laura, Bert, and Joel search for a hiding place for Martin to hide in if the slave catchers come to search for him.

While eating breakfast Laura, Bert, and Martin all hear a knocking noise and Martin immediatly runs upstairs to Laura's room to hide in his assigned hiding place.

When the slave catchers go to investigate the upstairs, Bert pulls Martin out of his hiding place in the closet and places him in his secret hinding place under the rug. Then, Laura sits on top of the rug and pretends to knit while they investigate.

The Tryon house is a structure that was built by Josiah Tryon beside the Niagra River. It contains four cellars that makes it good for hiding slaves until they get on the boat and go to Canada.

After getting home Laura and Bert hear a strong knocking at the door. Walt, one of the slave catchers, comes through the door and tells Bert that he is arrested for questioning.

Laura and Martin run across the forest trying to figure out how to get to the Tryon house across the river to Martin's freedom.

While they are running Laura bumps into Joel Todd and gets the way to the river to send Martin to freedom.

Both Laura and Joel send Martin on his way, on the boat, to go Canada to see his father. Laura realizes she has donea good dead for Martin.

After exploring the house Laura and Bert's carriage is stolen when a rescued slave and his rescuer so they could escape before getting caught.

After Bert is arrested Laura promises Matin that she is going to take him to the river.
