  • Valentin Ross

  • Mathieu Orfila

  • James Marsh

    Developed a method for testing the presence of arsenic in human tissue.
  • First microscopic detection of sperm

    When a potential bodily fluid is first discovered at a crime scene, actions may be required to visualize the stain.
  • Alphonse Bertillon

    Created the Bertillion System of Criminal identification.
  • Hans Gross

    Came up with cross transfer evidence. Lead to the discovery of type A, B, AB, and O blood groups in the early 20th century. He helped to establish the science of forensics.

  • New York State Prison System

    Began their first systematic use of fingerprints for criminal identification.
  • Edmond Locard

    Known for his formulation of the Locard’s Exchange Principle and for improving dactylographic. (fingerprint science). It was not until 1912 that the police department officially recognized the laboratory, and so the first forensic science laboratory was officially formed.

  • First Crime Lab

    August Vollmer, chief of the Los Angeles Police, established the first American police crime laboratory in 1924. The FBI first founded it in 1908. it didn't have its own forensic crime laboratory -- that wasn't set up until 1932.
