Five Historically Impactful Education Events

  • State Requirements

    State Requirements
By 1867, most states required all teachers to pass a state certification test before being allowed to teach in schools. This was an important milestone as it set the beginning standards of education requirements for teachers. It ensured that educators were qualified to be creating the future generations!
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
This Supreme Court case ruled it unconstitutional to segregate schools based on race. This was a major step in closing the educational gap and making education the same for all. It allowed ALL students to receive the same education in the same building.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The point of ESEA was to close the achievement gap and allow additional resources for vulnerable students. This was a major turning point in education as it helped to create education for all. It allocated extra funding for schools in low poverty areas, allowing them some of the same opportunities as schools in wealthier areas.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
Title IX was passed which ended discrimination based upon sex This was another major milestone in education as it closed the gap between males and females in education. Now, not only were all races receiving the same education, now both genders were allowed the same educational opportunities as well.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
No Child Left Behind was an extension of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. This was the increase of the federal governments role in education. NCLB created federal standards that were given across states in the form of an exam. The goal was to increase funding in the lower performing areas, in hopes that all states would have 100% proficiency within the deadlines. However, this also created the ideology of teachers teaching to the test, versus teaching to gain knowledge.
