John Dight purchased Melbourne block 88, which includes 26 acres of land along the Yarra River. He established Melbourne’s first water-powered flour mill at Yarra Bend.

John Dight moved to Port Phillip after one year running the flour mill business.

In 1841 the first steam powered flour mill was constructed in Melbourne. The mill was powered by water from the river, soon he brought bricks from Tasmania for it. There was a wheel underneath the water for the mill to work.

In 1895 the wooden weir was built but it was inefficient because it was underwater and would break easy.

Dights Falls was owned by the Wurrundjeri People. The Wurundjeri people are the traditional owners of the land that is now known as the City of Yarra.

In December 1940 the old weir broke, Melbourne was thinking to build a new weir with the same height, shape and form to the existing structure. They would also build a new fishway there.

In 1979 a wall was built at Dights Falls, the old wall built there was damaged many times and repairing it was not an option so they built a new wall.

In 1993 the rock fishway was constructed but is now largly ineffective.
