    In the year 1100 Norweigan civilizations started to export fish to the rest of Europe with the objective of trading the fish for other products which were hard to grow in Norway due to the harsh climate conditions. For the fish not to rot during process the exported products were dried.

    Hanseatic Trade

    Hanseatic Trade
    Norway establishes trade alliances with the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League was a commercial guild of merchants and market towns. The ships would leave Bergen in Norway and head to Europe where the fish was traded for other goods.

    Northern Norweigan fisherman started in 1700 to trade with Northwestern Russian farmers. This trade involved trading Norwegian fish for Russian corn.

    Marine Research Institute
    In 1900 Norway founded the Institute of Marine Research. This institute monitors the stocks of cod, main Norweigan export. The institute also monitored fisherman actions with the objective of creating more sustainable regulations.

    The Norweigan Fisherman Association is founded. This become the national trade union so now trade would be done directly with the fisherman.

    Fisherman start to use the boat "Signal III". It is the first boat to use radars to locate fish.
  • Minsitry of Fisherie

    Minsitry of Fisherie
    Norway is the first country to found the Ministry of Fisherie in 1946. Reidar Carlsen becomes the minsiter.

    The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) is formed. It is formed with the objective of sharing shared resources, in this case fish.
  • 200 Mile Protection

    200 Mile Protection
    NEAFC implements a protection zone around Norway. The protection zone has a radius of 200 miles. Within the zone Norway has exclusive rights to the Natural resources such as fish.
  • Cod banishment

    Cod banishment
    Cod fishing was brought to a halt on 18th of April 1989, followed by the imposition of fishing quotas (limit on how much can be produced) on the coastal fleet the next year. Discard of fish is also banned.

    Norway receives acknowledgment of its commitment to sustainability when the final wild cod and haddock fisheries are certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council
