    In 1903 the first movie (that had a narrative) was created. It was made by Edwin Porter who was an employee of Thomas Edison. It was 12 minutes long and had 14 scenes.
  • Charlie Chaplin

    Charlie Chaplin
    Charlie Chaplin was one of the most famous actors in silent films. He was deemed the comic genius of the era. He started off making $105 a week and by 1917 he was making a million dollars a year.
  • Sound Technology

    Sound Technology
    Sound technology started to be developed in the late 1920s. These new films with sound were called talkies. The first full length talkie was called The Jazz Singer.
  • Color in Film

    Color in Film
    There were some early short films experimenting with using color as early as 1912. There weren't used in films until the 1930s. 2 examples would be Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz which both came out in 1939.
  • Wide Screen

    After the TV was invented the film industry needed something new. They invented the wide screen. With the new invention, they could now show movies on a bigger screen and make them more exciting.
  • Film Ratings

    Motion ratings were introduced in 1968 starting out with G, PG, R, and X. They didn't introduce PG-13 until later. Later on, they would also change X to NC-17.
  • JAWS and the start of the Blockbuster Era

    After the release of Jaws in 1975, the blockbuster era began. Usually, a movie would be named a blockbuster if there was a lot of "buzz" around it. Other blockbuster films around that time were Star Wars, Alien, etc.

    In this time period, more and more people started to use CGI (computer-generated imagery) in their movies. Examples of this would be fake scenes that they couldn't possibly make in real life. Some movies that used CGI were Star Wars and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • Very Significant Movies

    In 1997, Titanic was made making it the most expensive movie of all time (at the time) at 250-300 million dollars. It also became the highest-grossing film of all time (again, at the time) raking in more than 580 million dollars. In 1999, Star Wars the Phantom Menace comes out and breaks box office records raking in 102.7 million dollars in its debut weekend.

    In the 2000s, the transition to digital and at home movies started. DVDs started to get released with the movies and a whole new field was introduced to filmmakers. Different directors made sure to keep film alive.
  • Avenger's Endgame

    In 2019, Avenger's Endgame surpassed Avatar (2009) in becoming the highest-grossing movie ever made. It raked in $2,797,501,328. It would soon be surpassed by Avatar after it is re-released in China.
  • Covid-19

    Because of the Covid-19 outbreak a lot of movies have been pushed back to 2021 or even 2022. Along with that a lot of movies (mainly Disney+, HBO Max, etc) have been releasing on streaming services and in theaters. Some movies that were released on both were Black Widow, Shang Chi, and Soul (which was only released on Disney+).
