A guy named Batista set himself up as a dictator. On July 26, 1953 Castro and 150 supporters attacked Moncada military barracks attempting to overthrow Batista. But they failed, and Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison. -

2nd time attacking Batista
Castro was released in 1955 with a deal with the Batista government. But then he went to Mexico. Then he made another plan to overthrow Batista. On December 2, 1956 Castro returned to Cuba with a boatload of 81 insurgents. Over the next few years they attempted to overthrow Batista. -

In 1961 Cuba and US invaded the bay of pigs. The invading force was put down three days into fighting. US president JFK says that he supported the attack. -

In January of 1969 Batista fled to the Dominican Republic. So then a new government was created and quickly gained the recognition of the United States. So then Castro arrived back in Havana and people all over began to cheer. -
