Educated in private boarding schools, Castro grew up wealthy. When Fidel was 17 his name changed from Ruz to Castro. He attended El Colegio de Belen and pitched for the schools baseball team.

After his graduation in late 1945 Castro entered law school at University of Havana. In 1947 Castro became very interested in social justice. He traveled to the Dominican Republic in attempting to overthrow dictator Rafael Trujillo. But he failed but it didn’t take away his passion for reform.

Once Fidel Castro returned to the university he joined a group called Partido Ortodoxo. the group reformed government corruption in Cuba. He also tried to warn people about a former president who was planning to return to gain power.

A guy named Batista set himself up as a dictator. On July 26, 1953 Castro and 150 supporters attacked Moncada military barracks attempting to overthrow Batista. But they failed, and Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Castro was released in 1955 with a deal with the Batista government. But then he went to Mexico. Then he made another plan to overthrow Batista. On December 2, 1956 Castro returned to Cuba with a boatload of 81 insurgents. Over the next few years they attempted to overthrow Batista.

In 1961 Cuba and US invaded the bay of pigs. The invading force was put down three days into fighting. US president JFK says that he supported the attack.

In January of 1969 Batista fled to the Dominican Republic. So then a new government was created and quickly gained the recognition of the United States. So then Castro arrived back in Havana and people all over began to cheer.

In 2001 after a hurricane hit Castro declined US humanitarian aid. Instead he purchased food with the US. With the low fuel supply he sent doctors to Venezuela for fuel.

In 2006 Fidel castro underwent surgery. So he left his brother Raul as the country’s temporary leader. Raul served as second in command for his brother for decades.

In 2008 Fidel Castro finally gave up his position permanently to his brother Raul. He did this do to his physical condition. Fidel was 81 years old and Raul was 76 years old.
