  • The Victorian Dress (1850's)

    This image represents the dress style that women wore in the 1850's.
    It is the Victorian dress, that consisted of full skirts with a wire cage underneath to provide fullness.
  • Return of the Bustle (1880's)

    In the 1880's, dresses became long and consisted of lean, elongating lines. It was also the time for the return of the bustle. Gowns for women became tight and the era of the full skirt was gone.
  • The High Neckline (1890's)

    In the 1890's, similar strucutred dresses were still in style. They still had long and elegant lines but the differnce was the rise in high collars. Necklines were no longer simple, but had flare to them.
  • Return of the Past (1900's)

    In the 1900's, features from previous eras began to make an apperance. The train of the dress came back in a small way and the return of fuller skirts but only below knee level.

    In 1910's, women's hemlines began to rise. They went from floor length with a train to ankle length with slim lines. Fabirc became softer and more fluid to move in and it was the beginning of women leaving behind the corset.
  • The Times of Change (1920's)

    The 1920's consisted of major developments in fashion. Hem lines decreased and became a good deal higher than the ankle but still lower than the knee. Dresses became lose fitted and easy to move in, the shape no longer enhanced curves but instead created the shape known as the 'boy shape'.
  • War Time Fashion (1930's - 1945's)

    During the war time, fashion became more practical. Hems were lengthened slightly from the flapper era and styles became more conservative. Shoulder pads started becoming fashionale for both men and women and the use of man made fabrics was much more common.

    In the 1950's since the war had ended, the were larger quanities of fabric available and different types of fabrics. Dresses had detailed pleating to make full shirts and bold, bright colours made their way in.
  • Decade of the "Hippie" (1960's)

    In the 1960's, the mini skirt was introduced. Dresses became short and cuts were A-line. Bright colours were everywhere and new fabrics were experimented with such as PVC. The late 60's saw both men and women in bell bottom jeans and interesting psychadelic patterns on tops.
  • The 80's (1980's)

    The 80's saw many new fashions. The early times consisted of crop tops, leather/denim pants and high waists. It will also the start of the aerobics fashions and the athletic look was in. Very bright colours still existed and large lose jackets. Women would wear either pants or skirts/dresses.

    The 90's saw a continutation on the 80's and it became more minimalist. Denim was seen a huge was and women wore a lot of denim. Styles become more form fitting for women, enhancing shape once again.
  • Return of the Decades (2010's)

    The 2010's have seen a return of many fashion trends over the decades, including an aspect from all eras. We saw the return of the crop top from the 80's the full skirts of the 50's, denim from the 90's and high necks (although done differently). A-line styles have come back in as well as the bright colours from the 60's.
