    Catherine Beecher
    Catherine Beecher wrote the first FACS textbook recognized by the Department of Education. She founded the American Woman's Educational Association which aimed to send teachers west to build schools.
  • Justin Smith Morrill/Morrill Act of 1862

    Justin Smith Morrill/Morrill Act of 1862
    This Act was named after Vermont Congressman Justin Smith Morrill that provided grants of land to states to finance to establish agricultural and mechanical arts schools. It provided each state 30,000 acres for each of its congressional seats.
  • Land Grant University

    These are colleges/universities that were created under Morrill Act of 1862. The first institution created under this act was Kansas State University in 1863.
  • Branch Normal College (now UAPB) established

    Branch Normal College (now UAPB) established
    UAPB is one out of the two land grant universities we have in Arkansas. It was named Branch Normal College when it first established. It later designated to a land grand institution under the second Morrill Act of 1890.
  • W.O. Atwater

    W.O. Atwater
    He invented the first human calorimeter (the Bomb Calorimeter) which was operating by 1893. He wrote nutrition bulletins at Richard's request. He is also considered to be the "Father of Nutrition."
  • Ellen Richards

    Ellen Richards
    1842-1911. She mobilized a multitude of forces to launch the new applied field. She started school lunch program in 1894. She was pioneer in sanitary engineering and a founder of home economics. She was also the first women to be admitted to MIT.
  • Martha Rensselaer

    Martha Rensselaer
    She developed Cooperative Extension Service Programs at Cornell University in New York in 1900. She also decided to offer full-time home economics course.
  • CF Langworthy

    CF Langworthy
    Langworthy was co-editor of the Journal of Home Economics. He has conducted metabolic tests and even wrote nutrition bulletins for his experimental stations.

    This act created a national Cooperative Extension Service that extended outreach programs through land-grant universities.
  • Smith Hughes Act of 1917

    This act provided federal aid to the states to promote precollegiate vocational education in agricultural, industrial trades, and home economics. It was formerly National Vocational Education Act.
  • Vocational Education Acts of 1963

    This act provided grants to states to maintain, improve, and develop vocational-technical education programs.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1968

    This amendment addressed the nation's social and economic problems and continued funding for students who were at risk or with disabilities.
  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    This act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs conducted by federal agencies, in programs receiving federal financial assistance, in federal employment, and in the employment practices of federal contractors.
  • Vocational Education Amendment of 1976

    This amendment required states receiving federal funding for vocational education to develop and carry out activities and programs to eliminate gender bias, stereotyping, and discrimination in vocational education.
  • Carl Perkins Act

    This act had a focus on access for special populations which includes women, minorities, and special needs, and added a focus on program improvement.
