Evolution of Telephones

  • Late 1800's

    During the late 1800’s, a man named Alexander Graham Bell was working on a new invention called the telephone. In 1877, the first telephone lines were created. They were located between Boston and Somerville.
  • Early 1900's

    Early 1900's
    In the early 1900’s a man named Almon B. Strowger created the first telephone that did not require an operator. Although Strowger filed the first patent for a rotary dial phone in 1891, the dialing devices did not make their way into the bell system until the 1920’s,
  • 1970-1980

    1970-1980
    The phone created by Strowger was the only telephone for a while until the mid 1900’s when AT&T started working on a phone that could transmit images during a call. It was a good idea, but they didn’t know how to make it look good, so it was too big and bulky so they decided to scrap the idea. These phones were also known as "video phones".
  • 1987

    Cell Phones during the 1900’s were now able to be used on the go. This was huge in the Cell Phone industry and caused consumers to quickly understand the benefits of them. Cell Phone sales skyrocketed during this time. The term “Smart Phone” was still not a thing yet.
  • Early 2000's

    Early 2000's
    Mobile phones became more compact and high resolution screens had more features than ever before. New technology such as Skype was invented, which was basically equivalent to modern day FaceTime and was something never seen before, causing phone sales to increase even more. One of the most popular brands at the time was Nokia. This new generation of phones created the term “Smartphone”.
  • 2007-2021

    2007-2021
    In 2007 Apple released the IPhone 2G. This would change the world forever. From here on out, phones barely changed besides screen size, resolution, and camera quality. We think right now that phones cannot get any better, but that’s probably what people back in the 1900’s thought as well. Phones are also relatively new, and have been around for ~100 years. Conclusion: Phones came from big bulky wooden boxes to small metal objects with touchscreens that can be accessed at anytime.
