Atari VCS (Atari 2600) Comes Hot Off the Presses
The first Atari console is still a big hit today (and is apparently getting a remake in 2019) with the great releases like Space Invaders, Adventure, and Asteroids, and not-so-great releases like E.T. (Seriously, what in the world was that game?) and Pac-Man. The Famicom is (Re)Released as the NES
The NES, was a smash hit with Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Megaman, and Final Fantasy. It overshadowed Sega's Dreamcast and Atari's 7800 by a landslide, due to the quality of games and a trick they employed during the crash when it was released. They used R.O.B., a little robot helper buddy that was compatible with a couple of their games, to disguise it as a toy. The LAN Party becomes Popular
The LAN Party is a social event where multiplayer games are played through computers or consoles connected through Ethernet cables, started by Atari with MIDI Maze (An Atari ST game where up to 16 players could connect together using MIDI ports) and popularized by Doom. The Xbox Goes Live!
The Xbox was designed to be a PC disguised as a console. With the Xbox selling 24 million units before discontinuation, the Xbox 360 selling over 40 million, and the Xbox 1 selling 28 million(in its infantile stage) it is a clear success. The wide array of games from producers like Bungie, Activision, and of course EA made it a record-shattering console. (Wish I could've made a timespan.) The PS4 Rocks the Nation
The PS4 was and is a powerhouse. With launch titles like the ones in this video (shorturl.at/pHPT8), the reactions were mixed. But Sony is still releasing cool games like Spiderman and upcoming games like Final Fantasy 15, Just Cause 4, and porting games like South Park, We Happy Few, and Crash Bandicoot, with others still in development keep the flame burning. Nintendo Switches Things Up!
The Switch is the last in our timeline because it's the latest on the market. Its hybrid console-handheld design and interactive play style made it so popular that it outsold the WiiU in its first year.
