  • Bars

Starting in 1970 the uneven bars started getting farther and farther apart so that the gymnasts could perform release moves and other more complex skills.
  • The perfect tens

At the olympics in Montreal Nadia Comaneci completed four routines that scored perfect ten's: Two on the balance beam, one on the uneven bars and one on the floor exercise.
  • Vault

In 2001 they changed the vaulting table from a horse which is rectangular to the table which is much larger. The main reason for this change was because many athletes were getting injured from missing their hands on the small horse. now the table is bigger and there is a smaller risk of injury.
  • scoring system

in 2005 the FIG changed its code of points to a new way of judging gymnast's routines. The perfect 10 was replaced with a new, more complicated judging procedure that analyzed performances based on starting difficulty and execution. In the current system, a good score is usually in the mid-to-high 16's-not quite the same ring as the perfect 10, but possibly more fair and accurate for the competitors.
