    Proviso created a legislation if passed, Proviso would have outlawed slavery in territory acquired by United States as a result of the war. Although the plan failed, the intensity of the debate prompted the first serious discussion of succession.

    Compromise of 1850

    Created 5 laws in September of 1850.
    1. California is a free state
    2. New Mexico and Utah decided if the states were free or had slaves.
    3. Texas gave up land and paid 10 million dollars to their debt to Mexico.
    4. The slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia.
    5. An official paid a fine if they did not arrest a runaway slave.
