    This proposed a new and more effective slave law, and made California a free state.

    This required people that were helping slaves to be jailed. This helped the South's beliefs
  • Republican Party is Formed

    A political party that was originally created to combat the acts of slavery in the national government.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This was implementing the idea of popular sovereignty and citizens voting.
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The court case in which the Supreme Court decided that slaves living in a free state didn't make that slave "free." Because he was someone's property.
  • Raid of Harper's Ferry

    The Raid on Harper's Ferry was supposed to ignite a slave uprising in the South. It didn't work, but it did create even more separation.
  • Abraham Lincoln is Elected

    Lincoln opposed the spread of slavery, and also felt that slavery was morally wrong.
    This made South Carolina succeed from the United States!

    The very first battle in the Civil War. The Confederates won and the nation was shocked.

    A turning point in the Civil War where Lee's army is defeated. The Union regains confidence after this.

    This was Abraham Lincoln's speech after the Battle at Gettysburg. This helped people in the North focus on rebuilding America.
  • Grant Appointed as General of the Union

    Lincoln appointed Grant to commander of all the Union troops.
  • Sherman's March to Sea

    The plan was to gain control of the Mississippi. This was to split the Confederacy into two.
